Operation Threshold "Family Nest" Program
This program will be open to income qualifying families with children
ages 0-5 or expectant parents who are residents of Buchanan County. For

Free GED, Adult Basic
Education at Hawkeye Center
Free GED and Adult Basic Education classes are being held at Hawkeye
Community College's Independence Center, located on Jamestown Avenue in
Independence. These classes, sponsored by Hawkeye Community College,
meet
on Tuesday & Thursday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. To enroll call

Fontana Park Wildlife
Need Meat
Do you have some meat in your freezers that is going to waste ? If so
please consider donating it to the animals in the Fontana Park Wildlife

Bingo Every Tuesday in Independence
Bingo is held at the Buchanan County Fair Grounds every Tuesday night
at the
4-H building. It has a progressive jackpot starting $300 and 51 numbers
and reaching $600 as the numbers called progress. Early birds at 6:30
p.m.; regular session starting at 6:45. Concession available
Local Food Pantry Needs Donations
The Independence Area Food Pantry is in need of food and monetary
donations.

Public Library presents a "stirring" performance by the Spoonman! Jim
Cruise will engage the audience with his spoon music, sing-alongs and
funny stories. Come to this free event at 9:30 am at the library. A big

The Independence
Public Library presents Teddy Roosevelt Night as part of Riverside
Cinema on July 23rd at the River Walk Park Band Shell. Beginning at
7:30 pm, Darrel Draper will give his debut performance of Theodore
Roosevelt. Draper is the winner of 12 National Awards for his
historical reenactments and has performed for governors, congressman,
major corporations and the president of Mexico. Following the
reenactment, the library will show the feature movie, The Indomitable
Teddy Roosevelt starting at 8:30 and is sponsored by White Funeral
Home. Mark your calendar for 7:30 pm on July 23rd at the River Walk
Park for a night of fun, humor and history! If you have any questions,
contact the library. No Rain Date for this event...in case of bad
weather the events will move to the library's Community Room. For the
movie title, please call 334-2470 or pick up a bookmark at the library.

The Julie Jack 1st
Annual Benefit Golf Tournament is 4 person best shot (automatic 2 putt)
and is open to all! This tournament is to establish a scholarship fund
in memory of Julie Jack. Pre-registration is required and can be done
by either stopping out or calling the Three Elm's clubhouse at
334-4235. This cost is $30.00 per person, including a meal. Mulligans
and tee ups will be sold as well. If you need a cart, it is $22.00
($11.00 per person).

Come and have lots of
fun with the chance to win money by playing in the 2 person best shot -
age flighted tournament in memory of "Coach" Lyle Leinbaugh! This is a
for anyone age 50 and up...so bring your id! Pre-registration is
required and done by stopping out or calling the Three Elm's clubhouse
at 334-4235. Cost is $20.00 - 50% pay out (includes lunch). There is
also $5.00 mulligans and tee ups will be sold. If you need a cart, the
cost is $22.00 ($11.00 per person).

Come out and watch
the Cedar Rapids Kernels with your family! Kids will be able to wear
their Little League Uniform and participate in the pre-game parade on
the field at 6 pm. Tickets are available for purchase and pick up at
the Independence Area Chamber of Commmerce through noon on Thursday,
July 29th. Return the form and money to the Independence Area Chamber
of Commerce. Checks are to be made out to Cedar Rapids Kernels. Tickets
are $6.50 each. Gates open at 5:30, pre-game parade is at 6:00, and the
game starts at 6:35.

Cross will be having a blood drive at the First Presbyterian Church
from 12:30 to 6 pm on Monday, August 16th. Please use the 7th Avenue
entrance. You should bring your blood donor card or 2 forms of ID. Your
