Buchanan
County Historical Society Annual Meeting Recap
Posted 25 January
2010
The Buchanan County
Historical Society held their annual meeting on Monday evening, January
18, 2010 at Heartland Acres Agribition Center with 20 members braving
the foggy January weather. Annual reports were given by the
various committees.
The Wapsipinicon Mill committee reported that over 4300 visitors toured
the facility during 2009. The Farmers Market was a huge success
and will again be at the mill site in 2010. Contact Joe Olsen for
further information on the Farmers Market. A ‘spring cleaning
session’ for the mill will be the last weekend in April.
The Lee Mansion National Register application has now been forwarded by
the State Historical Society to the National Committee for
review. The Lee Mansion committee continues to pursue grants and
matching funds for the continuation of restoration work. Public
and private donations are being sought. Many thanks to
Independence Light & Power and the City of Independence for
contributions for this restoration project. Thanks also go to the
Buchanan Co. Board of Supervisors for contributions and continuing to
promote the County Historical Society.
Election of Officers were: Leanne Harrison, President; Wanda
Goins, Vice President; Anita Miller, Secretary; and Lynn Beier,
Treasurer. Hold-over board members include, Cheryl Hand and Judy
Scott (term ending 2010), Mike Cook of Lamont and Marlene Brown of
Brandon (term ending 2011), and Tony Bengston and Craig Spece (term
ending 2012); and Leanne Harrison, curator.
The regular monthly meeting of the Buchanan County Historical Society
is held the third Monday of each month 7pm at Heartland Acres
Agribition Center (theater area) with the exception of the May meeting
which will be held at the Mill to update the volunteers on new exhibits
and changes in policy. No meetings in July and December.
Dues are now payable. Several suggestions were made as where to
‘visit’ this year for the program instead of just a meeting. Stay
tuned!! Your dues also include a quarterly newsletter.
Leanne Harrison, president, made the following comment, “Many thanks to
the volunteers in all the different projects. Without YOU we
wouldn’t be here. The public is invited to attend the meetings
and become members. Current membership also includes a free pass
to the Heartland Acres Agribition Center.”
