Rabbis Briefly Walk Off Jobs at Agriprocessors
Posted 22 August 2008
On Wednesday, Aug. 20,
approximately 50 rabbis in charge of supervising the kosher slaughter
and processing of meat at the Agriprocessors plant in Postville walked
off their jobs in protest of recent pay cuts.
The rabbis were responding to pay decreases at the plant enacted in
response to the May 12 immigration raid. The walk-off caused the plant
to drastically reduce production, but only for a short time.
A spokesman for the Agriprocessor plant downplayed the incident,
explaining the walk-off lasted only 30 minutes after management
resolved the issue. Decreased wages, as well as increased time between
work performed and payment, had become an issue for the rabbis since
the raid.
Rabbis play a crucial role at kosher meat plants like Agriprocessors
because production cannot continue without their supervision.
