Silos & Smokestacks Awards Grants to Area Projects

Silos & Smokestacks National
Heritage Area (SSNHA) in Northeast Iowa has awarded $60,000 in grants
to help sites, communities and organizations tell the story of American
agriculture in Northeastern Iowa.
With $132,342.50 in requests, SSNHA will make grants to the following
recipients for the 2008 SSNHA General Grant Program:
• African American Museum of Iowa, $6,000 - To design a changing
exhibit “Distant Echoes: Black Farmers in America” that describes the
plight of African American Farmers in Iowa and on a national basis.
• Amana Heritage Society, $1,000 - To assist the “Amana History in
Motion” marketing campaign, promoting a new series of tours.
• Cascade Community Enhancement Corporation, $1,500 - To create two
interpretive signs at the Cascade Historic Limestone Silo.
• Grout Museum District, $7,000 - To develop and implement live
interpretation of how Waterloo-Cedar Falls ancestors lived.
• Iowa 80 Trucking Museum, $2,056 - To create an oral history exhibit
of Iles Family to compliment the 1934 GMC farm truck and stock trailer.
• Jackson County Conservation, $6,000 - To design and implement a
multimedia kiosk to allow visitors to explore a turn of the century
farm community.
• Jasper County Conservation Board, $4,000 - To create a traveling
educational trunk and interpretive kiosk at the Wagaman Mill.
• Kansas Public Telecommunications, $7,500 - “Country School: One Room
- One Nation” a one hour historical documentary film.
• Living History Farms Foundation, $7,000 - To assist in “Give Us A
Hand!,” a hands-on activity program that provides visitors with an
opportunity to try their hand at historic activities.
• Northeast Iowa Antique Engine & Power Club, $1,200 - To develop
interpretive signage.
• Office of the State Archaeologist, University of Iowa, $5,000 - To
design and prepare interactive, web-based resources titled “Ancient
Crops of Iowa.”
• St. Lucas Historical Society, $4,000 - To stabilize and restore the
Blacksmith Shop.
• St. Wenceslaus Church, $2,195 - To research and develop the oral
history of Czech, German and Swiss immigrants and their families,
farms, businesses and culture in the Spillville area.
• University of Northern Iowa, $5,349 - To create an exhibit called
“Iowa’s Dinner Table” and associated programs which explore food
production, preparation and service in Iowa from 1900 to the 1960s.
• Winneshiek County Historical Society, $200 - Design and print new
brochures for the Locust School Museum.
"We're pleased to have many applicants from new areas. Our grant
program continues to spread further across the Heritage Area,"
commented Don Short, SSNHA President.
Projects funded through the SSNHA General Grant Program must provide a
1-1 non-federal match to the grant award. Since the program began in
2001, Silos & Smokestacks has funded over $1.3 million to
non-profit organizations, local governments and communities in
Northeast Iowa to preserve America’s agricultural heritage.
Silos & Smokestacks National Heritage Area is one of 37 federally
designated heritage areas in the nation and is an Affiliated Area of
the National Park Service. The Heritage Area covers 37 counties in the
northeast quadrant of Iowa. Interstate 80 borders it on the south and
Interstate 35 borders it on the west.
Through a network of sites, programs and events, SSNHA interprets farm
life, agribusiness and rural communities – past and present.
