Plans for County Jail Changed to Reduce Cost
Posted 14 August 2008
In regular session this week,
members of the Buchanan County Board of Supervisors proposed changing
plans for the county's new jail and law enforcement center in an effort
to reduce costs.
Buchanan County supervisors on Monday, Aug. 11, approved a new project
design that eliminated almost 2,000 square feet from proposed facility.
The changes were made to the proposed project after the supervisors
rejected bids back in April because all of the offers were too far over
budget.
The original version called for the jail to have three floors.
The new plans eliminated the third floor but kept the overall capacity
the same at 41 beds. Reducing the number of floors significantly
lowered the overall price tag of the project.
Despite the recent changes, county officials are still concerned the
overall cost of the new jail and law enforcement center could still
exceed the budget.
Last August, local voters approved a $4.5 million bond in for the new
jail. About $775,000 will be used to cover various fees related to the
project.
Supervisors are scheduled to open bids for the project on Thursday,
Sept. 4, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Buchanan County Courthouse in
Independence.
