Local Airport Reopens After Runway Extension Posted 11 August 2008 The Independence Municipal Airport, located just west of the city, has now reopened to normal capacity after a year of construction projects and improvements. The recent re-opening of the runway was the culmination to a project that expanded the facility from 4,000 by 75 feet to 4,000 by 100 feet. Construction on the Independence Airport began last August and the improvements for runway construction, buildings, runway extension (now in progress), and grading for a future parallel taxiway carried a price tag of $7.8 million.
