Bananas Donated to Local Food Pantry Following Accident
Posted 9 August 2008
The Buchanan County Sheriff’s
Office reports bananas scattered onto Interstate 380 near Brandon after
a semi-trailer truck struck a buffalo Wednesday, Aug. 6, were
generously donated to the Northeast Iowa Food Pantry.
Deputies responded at 2:30 a.m. Wednesday morning to the accident,
which eventually involved three vehicles...and a buffalo.
Before a semi hit the buffalo and sent the bananas flying, a vehicle
driven by Donald Smith, 57, of Wooster, Ohio, struck the animal. Smith,
who was not hurt in the incident, was driving north on I-380 in the
right lane according to officials.
The Smith vehicle sustained about $3,000 in damage.
Next, Stephen Beauclair, 42, of North Dakota, who was driving a semi
tractor-trailer north on I-380 in the left lane, hit the buffalo.
After impact, the semi crossed the median and rolled onto its side,
blocking southbound traffic and spilling some 25,000 to 35,000 bananas
over the roadway. The semi sustained about $15,000 in damages.
A third and final vehicle was also involved in the accident. Anna
Corkey, 21, of Manchester, was driving her car south on I-380 when it
crashed into the semi. She was taken to Covenant Medical Center in
Waterloo for treatment of minor injuries. Her car sustained about
$5,000 in damages.
The 1,400-pound, 4-year-old buffalo belonged to Dennis Hunter of
Brandon. The buffalo, which was killed in the accident, was removed by
the Iowa Department of Transportation.
