Local Heroes Honored at Iowa State Fair

Iowa Governor Chet Culver
recognized the heroic behavior of 49 Iowans at the Iowa State Fair
yesterday, Friday, Aug. 8, for unselfish service to others in their
community.
Individuals were honored with Lifesaving With Valor (risked their own
life to save others); Lifesaving (saved the lives of others without
risk to their own life); Meritorious Service (provided fast help in
emergency); and Outstanding Service (performed a courageous act to save
someone who was in danger of losing his or her life or an unselfish
service in time of emergency but not necessarily life threatening)
awards.
The 14 Eastern Iowans who were honored are:
Steve McGuire, of Iowa City, Lifesaving With Valor
Mark Petersen, of North Liberty, Lifesaving With Valor
Cory Rath, of Cedar Rapids, Lifesaving With Valor
Josh Shepherd, of Iowa City, Lifesaving With Valor
All four were honored for working together to save a woman and her two
children from their car that lost control and crashed into the Iowa
River on December 14, 2007.
Adrianna Boettcher, of Mount Vernon, Meritorious Award
Boettcher, a newspaper carrier, was awarded for calling for help and
assisting an elderly man who had fallen in his home on November 23,
2007. At another time, Boettcher was delivering newspapers and found an
elderly woman face down in the snow and stayed with her until help
arrived on December 8, 2007.
Michael Stevens, of Iowa City, Lifesaving With Valor
Christy Stevens, of Iowa City, Meritorious Award
Both were honored for helping a woman safely escape from her burning
vehicle on July 15, 2007 in Poweshiek County.
Danielle Seymour, of Tama, Lifesaving Award
Seymour, 7, was awarded for rescuing her friend who was drowning in the
Meskwaki Casino Hotel pool on December 8, 2007.
Darryl Alan Putz, of Manchester, Lifesaving With Valor Award
Putz was honored for pulling a man out of a semi that exploded in Ryan
on December 19, 2007.
Robert J. Bierer, of Anamosa, Lifesaving With Valor Award
Bierer was awarded for saving two children and assisting in saving two
more after a car lost control and was submerged in flood water in Jones
County on May 23, 2008.
George Woodward, of Lowden, Meritorious Award
Woodward was honored for saving two men and one firefighter from a
burning apartment in Mount Vernon on February 13, 2008.
Travis Hargrave, of Fruitland, Meritorious Award
Maxwell Bloomquist, of Fruitland, Meritorious Award
Dillon Cooney, of Muscatine, Meritorious Award
The three, along with nine others from Letts and Wapello, assisted a
woman who was injured when a tornado hit her home on June 1, 2007.
