Posted 23 June 2008
Sixteen-year-old Shawn Johnson of West Des Moines secured her spot
yesterday, Sunday, June 22, on the U.S. Women's Gymnastics team which
is headed to the Beijing Summer Olympics in six weeks.
The U.S. Olympic trials were held this past weekend in Philadelphia.
Johnson and second place finisher Nastia Liukin were both named to the
team outright following the trials, the remaining four members of the
team have yet to be determined.
Liukin, a nine-time world medalist, and Johnson, the reigning world
champion, will give the United States a strong shot at winning its
first Olympic team gold medal ever on foreign soil.
Johnson will go to Olympic training camp near Houston after a short
trip home to West Des Moines to gather up the things she will need for
the rest of the summer and pack her bags.
The remaining four members of the U.S. team will be named at the
Olympic training camp.
